Zimbabwe tourism on way to recovery
Tourism figures in Zimbabwe have more than tripled over the past year following relative political stability within the country.
Mail & Guardian Online reports figures released during a recent investment conference, in which Zimbabwe Council of Tourism president Emmanuel Fundira attributed at least some of the increased visitors to the country to Western countries lifting warnings against travelling to Zimbabwe after the unity government was formed.
Fundira said 362 000 people had visited the country by August 2009, compared to 100 000 visitors the year before.
A decade ago, Zimbabwe earned $250-million in revenue from tourism but dropped to only $40-million in 2005. The figure has risen to $100-million since the unity government was formed.
"The economy has got so much potential but political stability is key," Fundira said.
