Country Information:

Malawi the warm heart of Africa, set at the Southern end of Africa's Great Rift Valley, is a cradle of Lakes and rivers.

Traditionally a friendly people, Malawians are quick to welcome visitors to their country which shares borders with Tanzania, Mozambique and Zambia. Malawi is a land of great contrast - from dramatic mountain plateaus with bracing air, trout streams and breathtaking scenery to Lake Malawi with its clear waters and white sandy beaches. Visitors can explore the unspoilt wilderness in five national parks and many smaller game and nature reserves.

Lake Malawi (Africa's third largest lake) is home to the unique Lake Malawi National Park, where snorkellers and divers can discover the wonders of the Lake's aquatic world.

Sailing, skiing, board sailing or simply lazing in the sun are favourite pastimes of visitors to the Lake. Elsewhere opportunities for hiking, mountain climbing, bird and game watching and photography abound. At some hotels and resorts golf, tennis, squash and horse riding are available. Fishing, both in the Lake and in rivers alone and mountain streams is a major tourist attraction. The lake alone is home to more than 500 species of fish.

Large handicraft markets and roadside stalls offer quality and variety - from carved wood and soapstone to clay figurines and items made from raffia and grass.
